I'm Miles Rozel, the guy behind Gunk Illustration!
My work is inspired by social and political issues that are close to my heart, such as gender identity and mental health. One of the projects I am most proud of is 'Education for Equality - Gender Identity Terminology' which is a series of short animations that teach some of the common terminology that surrounds transgender and non binary identities. It was made for the Creative Conscience awards and work is currently ongoing to get the animations seen and hopefully one day will be in school classrooms. I am also passionate about collaborating with others to provide visual work for their projects. I always do further research into the themes involved in a project and believe it is important to be well informed on any given issue to make work about. Previous clients mainly include theatre companies, comedians and musicians but I am just as fascinated in working with companies who are not part of the creative industries.
My work aims to address issues that are often difficult to discuss or taboo, i.e. the 'GUNK'! Just like we are socially sanctioned from letting the snot drip from our noses, we are expected to contain many of the issues that human beings so commonly face. I believe that illustration can make the world a better place through kindness, humour and education. I want to help us learn about each other and free some of the gunk we so often keep inside.
I am a musician as well as an illustrator. I do not believe they should be separate, to me they have always been telling stories together. As a child I watched music channels and read CD booklets before cartoons and books! One of my current projects aims to unite music and images to tell a modern story in the spirit of the great concept albums and alter egos of the past. Stay tuned for this work which is also under the name 'GUNK'.
